Seriously? Is January 2022 seriously almost over? We're still accidentally writing "2021" in date columns.
To say the least, these are tough times. But no matter how tough the going gets, human beings will always find a way to get through it. One such coping mechanism that we as a society have developed is humour. This humour has taken several forms over the years. In recent times, it has taken the form of memes. The definition? A piece of media that is copied and shared on the internet. So let’s take a look at the best memes that 2021 has brought us.
1. Two Guys on a Bus
The original illustration for this meme was uploaded by a Brazilian artist to his website in 2013. This cartoon was later turned into a meme that was shared within Brazilian twitter. The meme didn’t reach mainstream twitter until April of 2021. Since then, it has been shared widely and it’s hilarious!
2. Interview Oprah
The stills from Oprah Winfery’s interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry went viral in March this year and they are pretty funny. Netizens did not waste any time in ‘memeing’ them. The stills are from a section from the interview where Oprah was expressing disbelief at something said by Meghan. The meme became a sensational hit and still shows no sign of slowing down.
3. Winking Agatha
WandaVision, a MCU television miniseries released this year is March and it was full of meme material. Multiple stills from the series went viral but this Agatha meme took the cake. The original gif showed ‘Agatha’, a character from the series winking dramatically at the viewers.
In the following months Instagram and Twitter was flooded with GIFs and images of Agatha winking at us.
4. The Urge
‘The Urge’, a meme that is still relevant in 2022, started out as a single tweet in 2009. On December 21st, 2009, Twitter user @stompanie was the first internet user to use the phrase, writing, ”Fighting the feminine urge to be passive-aggressive until I get what I want”. The tweet however didn’t get any attention. On April 14, 2021, the phrase was revived in the form of a text-post on Tumblr. It gained traction from there and has become one of the best meme formats of 2021.
5. Bernie Sanders Mittens Meme
Joe Binden was inaugurated as the 46th President of the united states of America on 20th January 2021. During his inauguration ceremony, Bernie Sanders, a senator of the state of Vermont was photographed wearing a cosy jacket and a pair of mittens while the rest of the attendees were dressed formally. The picture started gaining a lot of attention and several memes came out of it. One especially funny format was when Mr. Sanders was being photoshopped into absurd places.
6. Suez Canal
On March 23rd, 2021, the Suez Canal, a passage that connects the Mediterranean sea to the Red sea, was blocked by a mega cargo ship called Evergreen. This was a major incident that caused one of the world's busiest trade routes to be blocked for days. That did not stop the citizens of the internet from making fun of the situation. Three hours after the incident took place, it was reported on Twitter and shortly after the memes started pouring in. Even though a lot of businesses faced losses, we got some pretty funny memes out of it.
